Meet the Team

Our staff is great at encouraging kids through their treatments, while also having fun along the way.

Dr. Jessica Chiang

Dr. Jessica Chiang is a board-certified pediatric dentist. She completed her pediatric specialty training and received her Master of Science from Tufts University in Boston. She received the “Richard C. Pugh Achievement Award” from the American Board of Pediatric Dentistry in 2009. This award is presented only to the top three percent of all the national candidates who completed the board qualifying examination.

Before she entered the specialty program, Dr. Chiang was a general dentist for many years. Because of her extensive experience in treating adults and seeing all kinds of oral problems, she believes in starting preventive programs at the earliest possible age — preferably during infancy. Dr. Chiang has a passion for helping children and changing their lives. Dr. Chiang and her family have suffered from allergies, sleep issues, and other airway issues. Through her constant interactions with children, she noticed many children suffer from airway problems or myo facial dysfunctions.

After she graduated from the specialty training, Dr. Chiang served as an assistant professor and director of the pre-doctoral pediatric dental program at Tufts University, Pediatric Dental Department. To augment her pediatric dentistry specialty, she also has a special interest in serving special-needs patients. She treated cleft lip and palate babies as young as two weeks old with nasal-alveolar molding appliances to decrease the deformity of the cleft and enhance feeding. She has extensive knowledge of cranial facial development. She was also a member of the Cranial facial team at New England Medical School at Tuft Medical School.

As an academic professor, Dr. Chiang constantly updates her knowledge. Over the years she spent time furthering her education in many growth-related courses.

She is an Ambassador of The Breath Institute, a member of the American Laser Study Club, and the American Academy of Physiological Medicine and Dentistry.

She studied different Laser therapies, the Buteyko breathing method, and myofunctional therapy. In hopes to provide the best for her patients, she is trained in myo-munch, Myobrace, Posture Orthodontic, and ALF appliances to guide the orofacial growth development of her patients.

Dr. Chiang wants to help others to understand the importance of oral functions such as breathing, sleeping, chewing, and swallowing, and their impact on general health.

Dr. Elise Hamilton

Dr. Elise is a prenatal and pediatric chiropractor based in San Mateo, CA. She has dedicated her professional career to bringing awareness to expecting families about the benefits of gentle chiropractic care for pregnancy and infants. Dr. Elise, as a mother herself, knows the impact chiropractic has on the pregnant body in helping you feel comfortable during pregnancy without back, hip, or sciatic pain and achieve your ideal birth through preparing the body with chiropractic care. Working with babies has become an important part of Dr. Elise’s practice as the increasing number of babies dealing with tongue ties, gastrointestinal difficulties, and breastfeeding issues rises at incredible rates. Gentle chiropractic can help babies relax and function at their best, improving the breastfeeding bond and experience, along with decreasing crying and angry babies because they are not experiencing GI pain any longer.

Dr. Elise is certified in the Webster Technique, which focuses on balancing the pelvis to improve discomfort during pregnancy. She is also a member of the International Chiropractic Pediatric Association, as well as a Pediatric Experience member. She continues to study daily to bring the best care and most up-to-date technology to each individual she works with. When she is not furthering her education in Prenatal and Pediatric Chiropractic, she can be found spending time with her husband and daughter and staying active.

Rebecca Huang
Doctor of D.C.

Dr. Huang believes a healthy body needs a healthy neurological system. The main control center of the body is the brain and its central nervous system. They are respectively located in the bony structure of the skull, spine and pelvis. A dysfunction in these regions can cause a disruption in the nervous system function, neurological signalling, and the flow of CSF up and down the spine. Relieving the dysfunctions or the major stress points in the body will help to facilitate effective nerve signalling, and good exchange of fluid, wastes and nutrients.

In order to have a healthy nervous system and a healthy body, Dr. Huang believes in working with the body as a whole. Just as the knee is connected to the hip, so the hip is connected to the lower back – or, in her words, “everything is connected”. Her training reflects this belief – in addition to her degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic from Palmer West, Dr. Huang is a certified practitioner of Sacro-Occipital Technique®. This is an indicator diagnostic and treatment system that treats patients based on indicators found throughout the body and then post-checks for proper change. She is also trained in advanced cranial work and has completed the Applied Kinesiology certification as well as seminars in P-DTR technique.

Tailoring her care to each patient’s needs because everyone is different. Dr. Huang’s goal is always to first find and then treat the root cause, rather than to merely relieve the symptoms. For example, if someone comes in with foot pain it could be a long-term result of an unstable hip area that causes the knee to collapse then the foot takes on more of the work which eventually leads to the dysfunction in the foot. She has seen patients of different ages that have had chronic headaches, low back pain, hip pain, and other conditions. She’s passionate about getting her patients back to being able to do what they love without pain or discomfort.

In addition to being a chiropractor, Dr. Huang is an avid classical music fan. In her spare time, she enjoys playing the violin, hitting the gym, and occasionally fixing her husband’s back. When she misses the snowy winters back home in Canada, she takes a trip up to Tahoe and spends some time skiing down the mountains with friends

Nisha E. Johnson
MS, CCC-SLPH, COM Speech-Language Pathologist

With over 10 years of experience as a licensed speech-language pathologist, Nisha has served a broad range of infants and children in assessment and treatment of speech, language, and feeding disorders. Over the past decade, feeding has become a particular passion. Nisha has experience working with infants and children in feeding from the NICU environment through teenage years, and held certification in lactation education, as well as training in various approaches to feeding disorders. She worked for most of her career in a hospital-based outpatient pediatric rehabilitation facility, and recently started her own practice, in order to focus on her clinical interests and on her family.

Nisha’s approach to feeding is holistic, looking at the child’s functional levels not just at the table or mealtime, but throughout the day and life. Feeding is relationship-driven, and she feels strongly that feeding therapy should be relationship-based. Nisha believes in partnering with parents and families to help children to achieve their goals. With younger children, she works through play to achieve outcomes, and for older children, she strives to bring them into the team, including them in goal-setting to provide motivation.

Through her work with infants and in working with her own children, Nisha has recognized the gaps in care when babies have feeding challenges, as well as the lack of a strong network. She is excited to work with the team at Function First in creating a more team-based approach to early infant feeding challenges.

Outside of therapy, Nisha enjoys spending time with her husband and two children, taking advantage of outdoor activities around the Bay Area, and indulging her hobbies of knitting and baking.
